About the Program

The Skokie Public Library and Dominican University GSLIS Internship Program offers current students an opportunity to combine practical work experience with their classroom education. Using a cohort model of learning, it provides a designed learning experience that will jump start each participant’s career in libraries. Tuition waivers are offered for this full-academic year appointment, which includes a practicum (LIS 799) in the fall and an independent study (LIS 801) in the spring.

Each intern specializes in one of the following areas, but also collaborates with staff across the entire library.

  • Access Services
    • Help with selection and management of collections
    • Assist with digitization projects
    • Provide reference and advisory services to adults
  • Adult Services
    • Emphasis on serving adults
    • Provide reference and advisory services to adults
    • Teach technology classes
    • Lead Book Discussions and other programs
  • Community Engagement
    • Emphasis on partnering with local preschools to serve young children and families
    • Lead story times and other programs
    • Provide reference and advisory services in Youth Services area
  • Learning Experiences
    • Emphasis on serving young adults (teens)
    • Staff High School Lounge and Jr. High Zone
    • Teach traditional programs and facilitate drop-in activities
    • Facilitate learning in the BOOMbox (STEAM lab) and Digital Media Labs

Interns also receive the following opportunities:

  • Work with an assigned mentor depending on career goals and interests
  • Participate in cohort meetings with Dominican University academic advisors and Skokie Public Library mentors
  • Work on significant projects to support the library’s mission
  • Learn about the operational side of public libraries
  • Attend local and online workshops and conferences
